New Species Application

Sylph (or sylphid)

Origins: The sylph are winged air elementals. They're an old race from the Aerie realm. The Aerie is a non-physical plane consisting of psychic energy and dreamlike visions. Because of the absence of physical violence and pain, there is no war in the Aerie. It is a peaceful place where the mind and soul are free from constraints. The sylph have existed for as long as the element of air has been present. Sylph are associated with the Fae, but are not part of the Faerie realm or any of its races.
Status: Sylph are thought to be near extinction, but because they're not native to the earthly plane it's difficult to tally the actual numbers of their population. They're not found a lot on earth and they're often confused with some kinds of Fae.
Physiology: Naturally, in their native realm, sylph are spirits. The're formless energy. They manifest in human form physically. As humans, they have normal bodily functions. Depending on the type of energy a sylph embodies, it may have some distinctive features such as wings, a tail, or claws. The age a sylph appears represents their level of strength and power as well as their general nature. A very mature sylphid with a more immature nature may appear youthful while a young sylphid who is weak may appear older. All sylph are immortal and don't age as typical humans do. They also don't die of old age. They're susceptible to the same injuries and illnesses as humans are when in human form. Due to their fortitude, they heal and recover a bit faster than typical humans. In general, sylph don't handle physical pain and discomfort well because they're not built for it. While sylph can breed with other humanoid creatures while in physical form, they don't conceive easily. Male sylph tend to have low fertility and female sylph tend to have difficulty carrying a child to term. When a sylph's physical form dies in the earthly plane it returns to the Aerie realm in spirit form.
Abilities: Individual powers and strengths vary. All sylph possess the potential to develop teleportation, trans-dimensional travel, invisibility, flight, weather control, clairvoyance, and telekinesis.
Vulnerabilities: Individual hindrances and weaknesses vary. All sylph are bound by their word, have trouble staying in one place, and can be kept out of private dwellings with barriers based in earth elements (such as dirt and herbs). They can be repelled by fire, but those in tune with the element of air can use wind to manipulate fire.
Morality: Good, but may not adhere to laws or social contracts unless they make a promise to do so.

The bar was crowded. A cacophony of sounds cluttered the air: some classic rock song crackling through old speakers, murmurs of conversation, clinking glass, bursts of laughter. Thea sat on a stool at the bar, her purse in front of her as she checked her phone, fingers moving over the screen to reply to texts and emails. She sipped the last of the martini she'd ordered an hour ago and taken her time sipping. Althea didn't drink much and a bar wasn't typically her scene.

Setting her phone down, she sighed, trying to vent a bit of frustration. She'd been trying to hire some help for her shop and it hadn't been going well. That was mostly because she was very particular. She needed people to work the register a few days a week and she wanted them to be knowledgeable about herbal medicine and holistic remedies. At the very least, they'd need to familiarize themselves with her products and be able to point customers in the right direction. It was also imperative that she could trust whomever she hired, as she also lived above the shop. Giving someone a key to the shop was a little like allowing that person access into her home and she didn't take that lightly.

Smiling, she waved at the bartender as he passed by.

"Excuse me. Could I have another one of these please?"

She tapped the rim of her glass and the bartender smiled and nodded.

"Sure thing."

"Thank you."

Althea rolled her neck, stretching stiff muscles.

Brick is definitely an odd fellow. Perhaps that's because he's not exactly a human man.
341 . shop owner . emily rose . mystical . half-sylph

appearance

Thea is 5' 4" with a petite frame. She has blue eyes. Her hair changes frequently. It's naturally coppery blond and she generally grows it long. Sometimes she'll trim it and lighten it to platinum blond. It depends on her mood. She doesn't style her hair all that much. Anything that takes more than five minutes to do isn't worth it. She has a set of wings between her shoulder blades. They fold in and are generally well hidden most of the time. When fully extended, they're a little over a foot long and about six inches wide. They're thin and white with small, highly flexible bones running through them. Althea has a crisp, feminine style that ranges from elegant and business-like to neatly casual. She's fond of black, white, and grey, as they go with everything. Most of her clothing takes special care to cover her shoulders. She owns a lot of light shrugs and sweaters. Because she keeps her torso covered, she tends to show off her legs with skirts and dresses. She likes pretty shoes and usually chooses bags and purses that are very colorful.

personality

Charming: Althea is very good at being likeable and making others feel comfortable, even if she has to force a smile and weave a web of B.S. She's spent enough time working in customer service to know how to be a people person.

Secretive: Having been frequently alienated and ridiculed for being what she is, Althea isn't too forthcoming. It's very difficult for her to trust other people and she rarely opens up to others about personal details.

Noble: Despite of (or maybe because of) her nature, Althea has high moral standards. She has no desire to be evil or do evil and she doesn't like when people assume she's evil because she's a warlock. She may not be good with a capital G, but she has a moral code that's pretty solid once you figure it out.

Manipulative: Althea's ultimate loyalty lies with herself, as she's the only person she's been able to truly count on. When presented with options, she will always take the one that most benefits herself, regardless of what it might mean for anybody else. She sees nothing wrong with manipulating others to better her own options.

skills

Clairvoyance: Althea is highly perceptive and she's often able to see things others can't, such as the true face of a demon when it's in human form.

Cloaking: She's able to mask her location from most beings with the exception of extremely perceptive ones such as psychics, very powerful beings such as gods, and other fae.

Glamour: Thea can alter the way others perceive her. She uses this ability to prevent people from detecting her wings. Some may be immune to her glamour, such as psychics, witches, and some well-practiced slayers.

Gliding/Flight: Although she believes her wings aren't functional, they actually are. She has the potential to glide (an extension of super-speed allowing her to quickly move from one area to the next), and to fly. But, she's always been so focused on hiding her wings she hasn't been able to tap into them properly.

Magic: Thea is able to wield magic, cast spells, and brew potions.

Speed: She can move faster than the typical human.

Occult Knowledge: She knows a thing or two about a thing or two.

hindrances

Combat: She's not physically strong and not well practiced in combat.

Weapons: She's awkward with most weapons.

Boundaries: Elements of earth can bind or her if manipulated correctly, such as used in a spell.

Honor: Thea is bound to a certain moral code. It may not be one many people understand, but it's a code she's bound to. She does what she promises and she's very careful not to promise things she can't or won't deliver.

Flighty: Although she wants to settle down somewhere, she tends to have trouble doing it. She also has trouble keeping in touch with people.

history

Althea was born Rose Elizabeth Blake on October 30, 1675 in Plymouth, Massachusetts. There was controversy surrounding her birth, as her mother Mary was unmarried and refused to name a father. For this reason, Mary was singled out and her daughter was alienated and often ridiculed. It made for a lonely childhood. She was home schooled by her mother, taught numbers and letters and told stories of historical events. From an early age, Althea developed a very close relationship with her mother. They were two against the world. Mary taught her to cook, sew, sing, and tell stories.

Althea was seven years old when her mark surfaced. She had protrusions at the shoulder blades that resembled white bat wings. They appeared as nubs beneath her clothing unless extended. Mary feared the mark, not understanding why it had formed, but she kept it hidden to protect her daughter. Despite feeling protective of Althea, Mary also feared this unknown trait. She became cold and distant, which hurt Althea deeply. She felt she'd done something wrong, but didn't understand what it could have been.

At seventeen years old Althea had grown into a pretty, but introverted young woman. Her mother had stopped having long conversations with her and telling her stories. She had no real friends. She read a lot and kept a journal where she sketched and kept track of her thoughts. One day while she was sitting under a tree her journal was snatched by someone who'd bullied Althea all through her childhood. The contents of the journal were read aloud by a group of teenagers, despite Althea's protests and attempts to get the journal back. Reading about her mark, they demanded to see it and the clothing was ripped from her back and her wings were discovered. This created outrage in the town, its people believing Mary had made a pact with the Devil and that her daughter was cursed. The two of them were regarded as witches and imprisoned. They were questioned and tormented. Ultimately it was decided that Althea was not a witch herself, but merely tainted by the ungodly actions of her mother. Mary was sentenced to death by hanging while Althea was exiled.

At seventeen years old with very little to her name and no one to turn to, Althea lived a life of poverty and vagrancy, traveling by day and sleeping outdoors by night, often in a makeshift camp in the woods when she wasn't able to make it into a town by nightfall. When she could settle in a town she offered any service she could for any payment that could be offered, including food and shelter. She mended clothing, sang songs for entertainment purposes, taught penmanship to children – any skill she had to offer she utilized. After several months living that lifestyle Althea met a man who appeared to be in his late twenties. She was singing in the center of a village, hoping to attract the attention of anyone with coin to spare for a pretty voice. He asked her name and she told him it was Rose. He said his name was John (an alias though she didn't know that at the time). After he made a bit of conversation she told him that, while she appreciated his company, she had to go on singing her services or she wouldn't eat. John deduced the woman was penniless and offered her a hot meal and a seat by his fire if she'd treat him to a song and a bit of conversation. Although she was suspicious of his kindness, Althea had little choice but to accept his offer gratefully.

The man lived on his on in a small cabin on the outskirts of the town. As promised, he allowed Althea a seat by his fire and shared a meal of stew with her. Althea was hesitant to answer his question about her life – where she'd come from, what had brought her to his village. At his insistence, she told a vague story of losing her parents and hoping to find a relative in her travels. John sensed her dishonesty and prodded her for the truth, reminding her she was a guest in his home. He threatened that if he caught her in a lie he'd put her back where he'd found her and make sure no one in town offered her a spare coin or even a kind word. Having received a glimpse of the man's temper, Althea fearfully told him the truth: that, because of her, her mother had been condemned a witch and hanged and she herself had been exiled. John asked why it was her fault and Althea said it was because of her defect, explaining the wings on her back. He asked to see the wings and Althea declined, claiming it was an immodest request. John told her she could stay under his roof and share his meals for as long as she liked if she did, in fact, have the mark she spoke of. All he required from her was proof. Reluctantly, Althea showed him her wings. John then, in turn, showed Rose his own mark.

From that moment on John and Rose formed a close bond. John gave her food and shelter and taught her of magic and the occult. In return he asked only for her company. As long as she stayed with him, keeping up conversation with him and respecting his hospitality, he would continue to take care of her, ensuring that she would never want for anything again. Rose remained with John for several centuries. They'd settle in a town for a time before moving onto another, each time creating new names and identities for themselves. They traveled the world several times over. It became a fun adventure, a game they got very good at playing. They became skilled liars and actors and over three-hundred years John trained Althea in the art of magic, teaching her everything he knew. John told her fairy tales and myths. He named her Althea from a Greek myth she'd liked hearing over and over. He kept his promise, giving her everything she could need or want, and she stayed by his side and never lied to him. For three centuries he was the only friend she'd ever had and the only love she'd ever known.

There were always things about John Althea found suspicious. She didn't always agree with his philosophies. She didn't believe in using magic for vengeful purposes or to harm people, even those who had wronged you. It always had a way of coming back around. John got on the wrong side of a lot of people with his liberal moral take on magic. He made a lot of enemies and his enemies became Althea's by association. Their life together became a life on the run as they tried to stay ahead of whoever or whatever was trying to track them down. Althea found herself leading the life she'd tried to put behind her, being exiled and ridiculed everywhere she went. This caused tension between Althea and John. She wanted him to keep a low profile so they could live somewhat peaceful lives and he wanted her to accept him for what he was, to embrace her own nature. Althea began to feel trapped in the relationship, having no one to turn to and nowhere to go. By design, she had nothing without him. She grew resentful of him and they were either fighting or coldly silent. Althea began to suspect there were other women in his life. When she confronted him he was infuriated, but didn't deny it. Althea decided she didn't want to spend her life in a resentful relationship running from place to place, but she was afraid of what would happen if John knew she planned to leave. So she waited until he was out for the night, packed a bag, stole some money, and left.

By the early 1900s Althea had settled back in New England. She made a home in the place that had once cast her out. She led several quiet lives over the decades, using magic very little and keeping to herself. She was a seamstress in New Hampshire and then a serving girl in a tavern in Vermont, a cleaning woman for an inn in Maine, a reclusive writer when she spent ten years traveling. She always changed her location, name, and occupation before anyone noticed her ageless appearance.

A few years ago she settled in Santa Cera and discovered the city's supernatural underbelly that went seemingly unnoticed by most of its residents. There was a place for her in the city that didn't require her to pack up and run at any moment. She realized she could have a life that didn't have an expiration date. Althea began working at a local magic shop specializing in holistic remedies. When its owner passed away the shop was left to Thea. She currently owns the Rosewood Herbal Apothecary in Santa Cera. She sells everything from decorative do-dads for lookie-loos to rare occult items of interest only to those who practice real magic. She offers various occult servces, but doesn't advertise them herself. Currently she's rumored to be the go-to girl if you have a supernatural ailment.
